BBC CUP round 2.
The 2nd round of the cup saw perhaps one of the biggest upsets in BBC history as the premier league champions JCS tumbled out of the cup after the former Wanderers side now SBFC turned it all around in the 2nd half. Rivalry was renewed after two old foes from the championship met BBC All sorts and Albion Wanderers but this time BBC All sorts had their full 9 man squad and kept it fresh to progress to the quarter finals. Real Akabusi who were recently relegated also look to capture the Cinderella story as they progress in what was a tight contest against Threshold United. Premier league runners up Friday Chiefs made no mistake of keeping their hopes of a season 4 double alive by taking their season 3 frustrations out on Tasmania Berlin 66. Mosquitos may be shocked at what I am about to tell you, you progress in the cup. The scheduled team you were supposed to play against Late N Disorient did not show and therefore you were given the All stars, who you may meet later in the competition. Despite your loss in a fantastic game I will still be putting you through, however in a twisted tale All stars will also be put through. What do I mean? See below
2 More entrants
Many of you must be thinking what on earth is this chairman thinking how can you have a cup of 6 teams in the quarter finals. Well fear not my fine feathered friends as always I bring more action. The All stars who had a very physical encounter against Mosquitos this week are one of the entrants that join as the Inter University champions. Also joining us are EFC who successfully won heat 1 of the Playfiveaside world cup some 3 weeks ago.
Therefore of course 8 teams remain which will boil down to 4 and then 2.
Player cam
Goal of the day
Matt (Threshold Utd). Should we give the goal of the day to Matt?? Well go on then I mean he did strike the ball even though it took quite a big deflection, but I always say it’s the thought that counts
Showboat
Sy (Mosquitos). Skilful and solid, Sy gets 3 yes’s from the 5 a side talent judges as he tricked his way into mosquito’s hearts
Natai (SBFC). Great speed and runs down the wing making light work of the JCS defence.
God damn goalposts
Abe, Ben and I think every Albion player hit the post or crossbar at least once in the game. Albion should have been up at the break and in the end ran out of steam and let the game slip out of their hands in the last 10 minutes
Oopsy Daisy
Dom (Mosquitos). An own goal that changed the game as Mosquitos were 2-1 up at the half went 4-2 down with this own goal as All stars took charge in this not so friendly encounter that saw the handbags come out.
Game on in the 2nd half
After a very slow first half it didn’t look like the goals would come from anywhere in the Threshold vs. Akabusi game, but at the half time break both teams injected themselves with something as the pace became supercharged. Rodrigo (Threshold) was fantastic and unlucky on 3 occasions not to put his team into the lead. Mike (Akabusi) took his chance when he got it but Matt soon equalised for Threshold with a lovely but deflected goal. Then as Threshold fans had their hearts in their mouths and their dreams alive Michael Condon struck again to send Akabusi through as fans stormed onto the pitch and kissed Michael all too provocatively.
Twist of fate
It all looked to be going wrong for SBFC as premiership champions JCS came from behind with two from golden boot winner Chris Haynes to make it 2-2 at the break. As JCS charged they just didn’t have that fatal finish but SBFC were strong with Andre and Lee and skilful through Natai. SBFC eventually went ahead and once they were in front there was no stopping them.
Crunch time
All sorts back line. Tania, Lionel, Steve. Holy moly folks after losing out twice to Albion in the past All sorts were no nonsense this week with some bone crunching tackles.
Saves
Both Keepers in the Albion vs. All sorts game, again diving at everything for the 2nd week on the trot.
Alex McCracken (Tasmania Berlin 66). Alex however does need a bit of help from his defence as his hand will eventually break.
Richard (Mosquitos). Great first half, shocker of a 2nd
Chris Day (Chiefs). Some great one on one saves early on in the game as Tasmania looked to take the lead.
Player of the week. Ronald Bullen (6 goals)
Team of the week
GK Alex McCracken (Tasmania)
DF Lionel Mullen (All sorts)
MDF Lee (SBFC)
AMF Phil Watson (Chiefs)
FW Ronald Bullen (Chiefs)
